Tian Xiang Star (the Seal): Meaning, Brightness & the 12 Palaces

Tian Xiang is the Seal star of Zi Wei Dou Shu — considerate, fair and a natural coordinator. It is never transformed in the standard stem table. This page covers its nature, brightness, the twelve palaces and star pairs.

What it is

Tian Xiang is classed as Water. The Quan Shu calls it the fifth star of the Southern Dipper, 'keeper of rank', with a transformation quality of 'seal' — the literary star of office that assists the throne. It is described as steady and sincere, unmoved by bad company or harsh stars, and its weak point is being flanked by harsh stars and a Hua Ji on both sides (the 'seal pinched' pattern).

Personality

Tian Xiang's baseline is 'considerate, proper, mindful of limits': helpful, a natural coordinator and lubricant in a team, and someone you can hand work to. The lesson is decisiveness — caring too much about others' feelings makes it hesitant and unable to refuse.

Tian Xiang brightness by branch

Using the Quan Shu brightness table adopted by this site's chart engine, Tian Xiang shines as follows by branch — Temple: Zi, Chou, Yin, Wu, Shen; Gaining: Chen, Si, Wei, Xu, Hai; Fallen: Mao, You. The brighter the position, the more freely the star's nature can express itself; a fallen position is not 'bad', it just needs more support and attention. Schools differ slightly on brightness tables.

Tian Xiang in the twelve palaces

Life Palace: Considerate, proper and service-minded; hesitates and worries about others' opinions.

Siblings Palace: Thoughtful with siblings and partners, often the mediator; don't give way until you lose.

Spouse Palace: A considerate, upright, well-mannered partner; polite harmony, though both defer and decisions stall.

Children Palace: Attentive and rule-minded with children and juniors; creativity is practical.

Wealth Palace: Stable income, salary plus side income; cap lending and guarantees.

Health Palace: Often urinary or skin issues and stress-related tension; watch the buildup of strain.

Travel Palace: Polite and well received away from home; suits service and coordination settings.

Friends Palace: Plenty of friends and good standing; you often help them — beware being tied by obligation.

Career Palace: Administration, legal, PR, secretarial, coordination and advisory work — doing things properly.

Property Palace: A tidy, orderly home with manners; family communication needs initiative.

Spirit Palace: Cares how others feel; fulfillment through approval and harmony; worries for others.

Parents Palace: Proper and supported with elders and bosses; some hesitation about expectations.

Tian Xiang: position and star pairs

Alone in the palace: Chou, Mao, Si, Wei, You, Hai.

Sharing a palace with another major star: with Zi Wei at Chen, Xu; with Wu Qu at Yin, Shen; with Lian Zhen at Zi, Wu. These positions are fixed, so once you know which branch a palace sits on you can tell directly whether the pair can occur there.

Zi Wei + Tian Xiang: Zi Wei assisted by Tian Xiang: proper, dignified and careful — a steady coordinator.

Wu Qu + Tian Xiang: Practical plus considerate: strong at both execution and coordination.

Lian Zhen + Tian Xiang: Principled and considerate: suited to civil service, legal work and coordination.

Which stems transform Tian Xiang

Like Tian Fu and Qi Sha, Tian Xiang is never transformed in the standard stem table. Its ups and downs come from brightness, its palace companions, and whether harsh stars and Hua Ji flank it from the neighboring palaces.

Common misconceptions

1) Tian Xiang is not 'without opinions' — it is a steadiness that does not push forward. 2) The 'seal star' is not a promise of office. 3) When flanked, the issue is pressure and gossip, not disaster.

How to read it in your chart

Check whether harsh stars or a Hua Ji flank it from the palaces on either side, then the partner (Zi Wei: scale, Wu Qu: practical, Lian Zhen: principled). Since it never transforms, look at the transformations elsewhere in its triad.
