Tian Liang Star (the Guardian): Meaning, Brightness & the 12 Palaces

Tian Liang is the Guardian star of Zi Wei Dou Shu — mature, protective and a natural problem-solver, ruler of the Parents palace. This page covers its nature, brightness by branch, the twelve palaces, star pairs and transformations.

What it is

Tian Liang is classed as Earth. The Quan Shu calls it the second star of the Southern Dipper, the star of longevity, whose transformation quality is 'shelter', and the ruler of the Parents palace. It governs protection, resolution and seniority, and the text describes an open, dignified, mild temperament. Tian Liang earns its keep by having something to resolve, so it often matures through responsibility and pressure.

Personality

Tian Liang's baseline is 'mature, steady, protective': elder-friendly, instinctively asks 'how do we resolve this?', and gains weight with seniority. The shadow is worry and lecturing — turning care into control.

Tian Liang brightness by branch

Using the Quan Shu brightness table adopted by this site's chart engine, Tian Liang shines as follows by branch — Temple: Zi, Yin, Mao, Chen, Wu, Xu; Prosperous: Chou, Wei; Gaining: You; Fallen: Si, Shen, Hai. The brighter the position, the more freely the star's nature can express itself; a fallen position is not 'bad', it just needs more support and attention. Schools differ slightly on brightness tables.

Tian Liang in the twelve palaces

Life Palace: Mature, steady and protective, good with elders; worries a lot and can be aloof.

Siblings Palace: The 'big sibling' among peers; watch boundaries.

Spouse Palace: A mature, steady partner who may be older or elder-like; care and lecturing are a thin line apart.

Children Palace: Loving and responsible with children and juniors; can over-manage.

Wealth Palace: Steady returns from seniority, expertise and trust; avoid guaranteeing others' debts.

Health Palace: Often digestion, chronic issues and worry-driven strain; has a medical affinity — schedule check-ups.

Travel Palace: Helped by benefactors away from home; suits stable, rule-based environments.

Friends Palace: Often older or mature friends who lift you; you are also a friend others lean on.

Career Palace: Education, medicine, public service, law, consulting and public-interest work; weightier with seniority.

Property Palace: Tied to family property and ancestral shelter; a settled home; often the one who carries things.

Spirit Palace: Mature and worry-prone; satisfaction from being useful; allow yourself to rest.

Parents Palace: Home ground: close to elders and bosses, with shelter early on.

Tian Liang: position and star pairs

Alone in the palace: Zi, Chou, Si, Wu, Wei, Hai.

Sharing a palace with another major star: with Tian Tong at Yin, Shen; with Tian Ji at Chen, Xu; with Tai Yang at Mao, You. These positions are fixed, so once you know which branch a palace sits on you can tell directly whether the pair can occur there.

Tian Tong + Tian Liang: Easygoing with steadiness: elder support and a relaxed, caring manner.

Tian Ji + Tian Liang: Planning plus steadiness: mature, a natural advisor and strategist who worries a lot.

Tai Yang + Tian Liang: Light plus shelter: upright and protective, suited to public service, teaching and public-interest work; likes to step in.

Which stems transform Tian Liang

Hua Lu: Ren stem; Hua Quan: Yi stem; Hua Ke: Ji stem.

Tian Liang has Hua Lu (benefactors and shelter flow), Hua Quan (responsibility and say) and Hua Ke (reputation and benefactors). It has no Hua Ji.

Common misconceptions

1) Tian Liang is not 'stuffy' — it is steadiness and responsibility. 2) 'Tian Liang lectures' is an over-extended state, not a rule. 3) Its 'shelter' needs something to resolve, so an effortless life shows it less.

How to read it in your chart

Check brightness (bright: shelter is strong; fallen: effortful worry), then the partner (Tian Ji: strategy, Tai Yang: light, Tian Tong: soft), then transformations (Ren: Hua Lu, Yi: Hua Quan, Ji: Hua Ke). Tian Liang in the Parents and Life palaces matters most.
