Po Jun Star (the Reformer): Meaning, Brightness & the 12 Palaces

Po Jun is the Reformer star of Zi Wei Dou Shu, the seventh star of the Northern Dipper — the energy of breaking old patterns and building anew. This page covers its nature, brightness by branch, the twelve palaces, star pairs and transformations.

What it is

Po Jun is classed as Water. The Quan Shu calls it the seventh star of the Northern Dipper with a transformation quality of 'consumption', says it is bright in the Zi and Wu palaces, and names Tian Liang as the star that can restrain it and Lu Cun as the one that tames its wildness. Po Jun governs break-and-rebuild, change and spending: the 'breaking' serves 'building' — with a goal it is a reformer, without one it is churn.

Personality

Po Jun's baseline is 'refuses the beaten path, ready to start over': restless with the status quo, with several big turning points in life; strong starts and weak finishes are typical. Writing down 'what I want, what I can afford to lose' before every big change is its most practical habit.

Po Jun brightness by branch

Using the Quan Shu brightness table adopted by this site's chart engine, Po Jun shines as follows by branch — Temple: Zi, Wu; Prosperous: Chou, Chen, Wei, Xu; Gaining: Yin, Shen; Neutral: Si, Hai; Fallen: Mao, You. The brighter the position, the more freely the star's nature can express itself; a fallen position is not 'bad', it just needs more support and attention. Schools differ slightly on brightness tables.

Po Jun in the twelve palaces

Life Palace: Dares to break and rebuild; dissatisfied with the status quo; many turning points — suited to pioneering.

Siblings Palace: Changeable ties with siblings and partners; collaborations form and split — set rules first.

Spouse Palace: An independent, unconventional partner; the relationship has big phases of change — stability must be built deliberately.

Children Palace: Unconventional with children and juniors; creativity is break-through.

Wealth Palace: Break first, then build; big outlays and returns — secure a floor, then experiment.

Health Palace: Often injuries, urinary issues and over-consumption; mind rest and safety.

Travel Palace: Big changes away from home, good at opening new ground; can feel adrift.

Friends Palace: A fast-changing circle; true friends take time to settle.

Career Palace: Innovation, reform, entrepreneurship, art and building from zero; not suited to a fixed routine.

Property Palace: Home and holdings change or get rebuilt; keep emergency funds.

Spirit Palace: Restless inside, satisfied by breakthroughs; a sense of emptiness can follow.

Parents Palace: Breakthroughs or clashes with elders and bosses; the early household may have seen upheaval.

Po Jun: position and star pairs

Alone in the palace: Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu.

Sharing a palace with another major star: with Zi Wei at Chou, Wei; with Wu Qu at Si, Hai; with Lian Zhen at Mao, You. These positions are fixed, so once you know which branch a palace sits on you can tell directly whether the pair can occur there.

Zi Wei + Po Jun: Scale plus change: big ideas and many turns; someone to help finish things is useful.

Wu Qu + Po Jun: Money meets reform: finances swing, breaking before building; secure cash flow first.

Lian Zhen + Po Jun: Fixation plus reform: big swings, a risk of extremes, and real breakthrough power.

Which stems transform Po Jun

Hua Lu: Gui stem; Hua Quan: Jia stem.

Po Jun has Hua Lu (change succeeds, more opportunities) and Hua Quan (turns drive into control). It has no Hua Ke or Hua Ji, so its churn and drain come from brightness, its companions and harsh stars.

Common misconceptions

1) Po Jun is not 'ruin or a spendthrift' — it is energy for change; with a goal it is investment. 2) It is not 'a hard life', just a more dramatic one. 3) It is brightest at Zi and Wu, but that doesn't make the other branches bad.

How to read it in your chart

Check brightness (Zi and Wu brightest), then the partner (Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen decide whether it leans toward scale, finance or principle), then transformations (Gui: Hua Lu, Jia: Hua Quan) and stabilizers in the triad such as Tian Fu, Tian Xiang or Tian Liang.
