Tai Yin Star (the Moon): Meaning, Brightness & the 12 Palaces

Tai Yin is the Moon star of Zi Wei Dou Shu — delicate, reserved and sensitive, the partner of Tai Yang and ruler of the Property palace. It is brightest in night-time positions. This page covers its nature, brightness, the twelve palaces, star pairs and transformations.

What it is

Tai Yin is classed as Water. The Quan Shu calls it the essence of water and the ruler of the Property palace, partnered with the sun; its transformation quality is 'richness'. It governs home, the treasury, the mother and female relatives, and delicate emotion. Like Tai Yang it depends on brightness, but inverted: brightest at Hai, Zi and Chou, bright at Yin and Xu, and dim from Mao through Wei.

Personality

Tai Yin's baseline is 'delicate, reserved, sensitive': gentle, aesthetic, observant; emotionally rich but not showy; values home and security, good at saving and slow accumulation. The lesson is unspoken hurt — keeping feelings in — which is stronger when the star is dim.

Tai Yin brightness by branch

Using the Quan Shu brightness table adopted by this site's chart engine, Tai Yin shines as follows by branch — Temple: Zi, Chou, Hai; Prosperous: Yin, Xu; Favorable: Shen; Weak: Wu, Wei, You; Fallen: Mao, Chen, Si. The brighter the position, the more freely the star's nature can express itself; a fallen position is not 'bad', it just needs more support and attention. Schools differ slightly on brightness tables.

Tai Yin in the twelve palaces

Life Palace: Gentle, reserved, aesthetic and emotionally fine-grained; charm and a store of resources when bright, rumination when dim.

Siblings Palace: Thoughtful and caring with siblings and partners, often giving quietly; an inward relationship.

Spouse Palace: A gentle, subtle, emotionally rich partner; atmosphere and detail matter; hurts are often unspoken.

Children Palace: Tender and attentive with children and juniors; creativity leans aesthetic and emotional.

Wealth Palace: Slow, steady accumulation, good at saving, close to property; guard against 'comfort spending' when low.

Health Palace: Often hormonal balance, mood and sleep; a regular routine and an emotional outlet.

Travel Palace: A soft presence abroad; gets delicate help; choose calm, stable settings.

Friends Palace: Caring, close friendships with few but deep ties; moods are easily shared.

Career Palace: Design, art, writing, education, finance and asset management; steady, cumulative work.

Property Palace: Home ground: treasury and household; a comfortable home and good property luck, best when bright.

Spirit Palace: A rich, sensitive inner life; satisfaction in quiet beauty and belonging; prone to melancholy.

Parents Palace: Traditionally close to the mother or female elders — cared for, and emotionally affected by them.

Tai Yin: position and star pairs

Alone in the palace: Mao, Chen, Si, You, Xu, Hai.

Sharing a palace with another major star: with Tian Ji at Yin, Shen; with Tai Yang at Chou, Wei; with Tian Tong at Zi, Wu. These positions are fixed, so once you know which branch a palace sits on you can tell directly whether the pair can occur there.

Tian Ji + Tai Yin: Tian Ji's agility with Tai Yin's sensitivity: sharp and sensitive, a planner who may overthink.

Tai Yang + Tai Yin: Sun and Moon together: yin-yang balance, softness with strength; brightness matters, and giving needs balancing with feeling.

Tian Tong + Tai Yin: Gentle plus reserved: values life's small pleasures and home; leans toward enjoyment and family.

Which stems transform Tai Yin

Hua Lu: Ding stem; Hua Quan: Wu stem; Hua Ke: Geng stem, Gui stem; Hua Ji: Yi stem.

Tai Yin has all four transformations: Hua Lu (quiet, steady wealth and affinity), Hua Quan (more say over home and treasury), Hua Ke (reputation and benefactors) and Hua Ji (emotions and home issues).

Common misconceptions

1) Tai Yin is not 'female only' — it is a delicate, reserved quality. 2) A fallen Tai Yin is not 'bad fate'; emotions and savings need more care. 3) Tai Yin with Hua Ji usually signals emotion and home matters, not 'losing money'.

How to read it in your chart

Check brightness (Hai, Zi and Chou brightest; Mao through Wu dim), then the partner (Tian Ji: nimble, Tai Yang: yin-yang balance, Tian Tong: gentle), then transformations (Ding: Hua Lu, Wu: Hua Quan, Geng or Gui: Hua Ke, Yi: Hua Ji). Tai Yin in the Property and Spirit palaces is worth close reading.
