Life Palace (Ming Gong): Meaning, Triad & the 14 Major Stars
The Life Palace is the first and central palace of a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart, showing temperament, life direction and overall pattern. This page explains what it shows, its opposite and triad palaces, how to read an empty Life Palace, the four transformations here, and how the fourteen major stars differ in it.
What the Life Palace shows
The Life Palace is the 'self' of the chart: temperament, direction and overall pattern are read here. The major stars form the factory settings, brightness is performance, and companion stars, harsh stars and transformations are the aftermarket parts. The branch and stem of the Life Palace also set the stems and flying stars of the other eleven palaces.
Modern reading
Read the Life Palace as a manual for 'how I tend to meet the world', not a verdict. The same star behaves very differently at different brightness and with different helpers. Read it together with the Body Palace: the Life Palace is the baseline, the Body Palace the focus of mid-to-late life (it lands in one of six palaces: Life, Spouse, Wealth, Travel, Career or Spirit).
Opposite palace and triad
The Life Palace's opposite is the Travel Palace; its triad palaces are the Wealth Palace and the Career Palace. When you read the Life Palace, these four palaces 'shine' onto it together and should be read as one picture.
Beyond its own stars, the Life Palace is colored by its opposite and triad palaces, so read it with Travel, Wealth and Career.
If the palace is empty
A palace with no major star is called empty; borrow the major stars of its opposite (the Travel Palace) to read it, discount the borrowed stars, and then add the palace's own companion stars, harsh stars and transformations.
Four transformations in the Life Palace
Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji falling into the Life Palace activate the area of personality and how you meet people: Hua Lu tends to bring affinity and ease, Hua Quan control and initiative, Hua Ke reputation and benefactors, Hua Ji fixation and lessons. The site has a separate entry for each, linked below.
The fourteen major stars in the Life Palace
Each of the fourteen major stars behaves differently in the Life Palace. The site has a separate entry for each star, covering temperament, career, love and wealth — see the links below.
Common misconceptions
1) The Life Palace is not 'fate' — it shows a starting point and tendencies. 2) An empty Life Palace is not 'no destiny'; it is highly adaptable. 3) The Life Palace alone is not enough — the triad, decade cycles and years must be read too.
How to read it
Start with the branch, the major stars and their brightness; then companion and harsh stars and transformations; then the opposite (Travel) and the triad (Wealth, Career); finally compare with the Body Palace.
