Zi Wei Dou Shu vs BaZi: what's the difference?

Both systems start from birth date and time, so they're often mentioned together, but they are different tools: one places stars into twelve palaces to make a map; the other arranges stems and branches into four pillars to study the Five Elements. Here is a side-by-side, without ranking them.

Structure: a palace map vs four pillars

Zi Wei Dou Shu places the fourteen major stars and many minor stars into twelve palaces from the lunar birth date and hour, producing a spatial chart where each palace corresponds to an area of life; reading means seeing which stars sit where and with whom. BaZi writes the birth year, month, day and hour each as a stem-branch pair — four pillars, eight characters — and studies Five Elements balance, the Ten Gods and favorable elements.

Different year and month boundaries

BaZi changes the year at Li Chun (start of spring) and the month at solar terms. Zi Wei Dou Shu works on the lunar calendar; the standard convention changes the year at Lunar New Year and uses lunar months (9zi.ai defaults to this and can switch to Li Chun). People born between Li Chun and Lunar New Year, or near a solar-term change, may therefore get a different “year” or “month” in the two systems — not an error, a difference of system.

Dependence on birth time

Both need the birth hour. In Zi Wei Dou Shu the Life and Body Palaces come from the birth month and hour, so one hour-branch off rearranges the whole chart; in BaZi the hour pillar changes. When the time is uncertain, treat conclusions from either system with caution. True solar time and daylight-saving correction matter for both.

What each is good at

Zi Wei Dou Shu is good at the structure of a specific area — what sits in the Career, Spouse or Wealth palace, what it meets and which transformations pull on it — and at timing through decade and annual overlays. BaZi is good at the overall Five Elements balance, the strength of the Day Master and its favorable elements, and at how luck-pillar and annual stems and branches act on the natal chart.

Common uses

For an area-by-area review (love, career, money, family) the palace layout is intuitive. For temperament in Five Elements terms, date selection, or relating a year's stem-branch to the natal chart, BaZi has wider practice. Both have mature compatibility methods; 9zi.ai's four-system compatibility uses BaZi and Zi Wei together with Western and Jyotish.

Why many people read both

Different starting points can prompt each other: one may show a transformation pulling on the Spouse palace while the other shows a clash in the Day Branch. They don't need to agree. Treat them as two angles rather than arguing which is more accurate. Either way, they are traditional tools for self-reflection, not deterministic predictions, and not a substitute for medical, financial or life-decision advice.

Q: Which is more accurate, Zi Wei Dou Shu or BaZi?

There is no verifiable “more accurate”. They answer differently shaped questions: Zi Wei is area-structured, BaZi is Five Elements-balanced. Many people use both as two perspectives.

Q: Does BaZi use Li Chun and Zi Wei use Lunar New Year?

BaZi uses Li Chun for the year; the standard Zi Wei Dou Shu convention uses Lunar New Year, though some schools use Li Chun. 9zi.ai defaults to Lunar New Year and lets you switch.
